Nidri harbour lies at the narrowest strait between Lefkada's eastern shore and the scattered isles of the inner Ionian — Meganisi, Madouri, Skorpios, Sparti — a labyrinth of limestone and maquis that Odysseus may have threaded three millennia ago.
The waterfront promenade, lined with tamarisk and moored caïques, became a ferry terminus in the 1960s when seasonal traffic to the satellite islands demanded scheduled service. By the 1980s private operators began converting fishing boats into day-excursion vessels, and today Nidri dispatches more than two dozen craft each morning between April and October, carrying upward of fifteen hundred passengers on peak summer days.
The standard Nidri boat tours route forms a clockwise loop: south past the reef-fringed entrance to Vlycho Bay, east across open water to Meganisi's northern anchorages — Abelaki, Spartochori cliff — then north to the scrub-covered ridges of Kalamos and Kastos, returning via the private shores of Skorpios, the Onassis family island closed to the public since 1968. Operators typically drop anchor three or four times, allowing passengers to swim in water that registers twenty-four to twenty-six degrees Celsius in midsummer and maintains visibility beyond fifteen metres thanks to sparse coastal development and limited agricultural runoff. Lunch is served aboard or ashore depending on the itinerary — grilled snapper, horiatiki salad, local white wine from the Verdea grape varietal cultivated on terraced plots above Nidri since Venetian rule.
Marine wildlife sightings increased after the Greek government designated the surrounding waters a National Marine Park extension zone in 2021, affording seasonal protection to loggerhead turtles and Mediterranean monk seals. Afternoon departures between May and September now include dedicated wildlife-watching legs, with naturalist guides pointing out basking turtles near Atokos reef and, on rare occasions, monk seals hauled out on the sea caves of Arkoudi. The forgotten-islands itinerary — marketed under that name since 2019 — pushes farther north to the uninhabited outcrops of Oxia and Atokos, where Venetian watchtowers survive as roofless shells and shepherd huts cling to slopes too steep for mechanized farming. These extended sailings return to Nidri near sunset, when the Lefkada mountains turn amber and the strait fills with returning yachts.
