Nidri Harbour sits at the narrowest point between Lefkada's eastern coast and the private island of Skorpios, once owned by Aristotle Onassis.
The channel here is less than 800 metres wide, creating a natural wind-break that has made the small port Lefkada's busiest departure point for boat cruises since the early 1990s. Sheltered by Skorpios to the east and the bulk of Lefkada's central plateau to the west, the bay remains calm even when the Ionian open water sees swells above two metres.
Most Nidri boat cruises follow a counter-clockwise arc through the satellite islands — Meganisi, Kastos, Kalamos, and occasionally Atokos — returning before sunset. Meganisi, the closest inhabited island, lies just 4.5 kilometres south-east and serves as the first anchor point for lunch stops and swimming breaks. The island's two main villages, Katomeri and Vathy, were settled by refugees from the mainland in the 17th century, and many of the harbour-side tavernas still operate as family concerns. Kastos and Kalamos, further north, are smaller and less developed; Kastos has a permanent population of fewer than 50 residents, most of whom work in olive cultivation or small-scale fishing. Marine wildlife sightings are common in the deeper channels between the islands, particularly loggerhead turtles and Mediterranean monk seals, though the latter are rare and typically spotted only in early morning or late afternoon transits.
The physical infrastructure at Nidri Harbour expanded in 2019 with the addition of a second floating pontoon, increasing berthing capacity to 22 small passenger vessels. Most operators use traditional Greek caiques — wooden-hulled boats with open decks and canvas awnings — though a handful now deploy fibreglass RIBs for faster wildlife-focused itineraries. Departure times cluster between 09:00 and 10:30, with the majority of full-day Nidri boat cruises tours returning between 17:00 and 18:30. The harbour itself is free to walk through, with ticketing handled directly by operators at small kiosks along the waterfront promenade. Advance booking has become standard since 2023, particularly for July and August sailings, when daily passenger counts can exceed 300 across all vessels.
